Styles of Dance
Highland dancing is one of the oldest forms of folklore dancing. The most common being the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance. The dances are made up in parts known as steps, and in each dance there are usually 4 or 6 steps. Highland dance is great for coordination and muscle development
Highland dancing is danced in soft shoes. Shorts are required or tight fitting leggings, and hair must be pulled off of the face. Beginner students will learn the traditional dances as well as form, technique. Advanced students will continue to perfect the technique of traditional dances such as the Highland Fling, Sean Truibhas, and Sword Dance, as well as learn original steps and choreographies with which they will perform according to their own willingness at shows, festivals and events.
With quick movements of the feet, the dancer drums out the beat with their shoes, the footwork being the most important body part. The most common of dances are the clog, jig and reel with their differing of tempos. Step dance originated with the Celtic people of Western Europe which then spread to Ireland and eventually to North America.
With its fast energetic style, it is a great workout for all ages of any level. Step Dancing is performed in character shoes with special clickers attached to the toe and heel of the shoe. Work out clothes should be worn, shorts, jogging pants, track suit, but nothing to interfere with the feet such as the pants being too long. All students will learn basic original steps choreographed and used exclusively by Bold Steps and then move on to learning more complex and difficult steps and routines. With these routines, dancers will be able to perform in shows, events and festivals according to their own willingness.
